Honduras

Honduras is often overlooked by travelers, perhaps because its crime rates are higher than its neighbors'. However, it is well worth a visit, especially if you're looking for a quick beach getaway with world class scuba diving.

Top Locations

Bay Islands (Roatán and Utila): A scuba diver's paradise. Both islands sit on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (the second largest reef system in the world, after Australia's Great Barrier Reef).

Copán: One of the most important Mayan sites in the world. It's famous for its intricate stone carvings (called stellae) and for the Hieroglyphic Stairway (the longest Mayan text discovered). These ruins are far less crowded than both Chichén Itzá (Mexico) and Tikal (Guatemala).

A TASTE OF HONDURAS

I highly recommend trying the baleadas, a staple in Honduran cuisine! They are thick flour tortillas folded around refried beans, cheese, and various other toppings and can be served for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
