Tanzania
Tanzania is a top contender for my absolute favorite country on planet Earth. The predator-prey interactions I got to witness were unbelievable. Tanzania also has a rich cultural heritage, with over 120 ethnic groups ("tribes"), including the Hadzabe: the last hunter-gatherers on the continent of Africa.
Top Locations
Serengeti National Park: Arguably the world's most famous national park. The wildlife density and big cat sightings are unparalleled here, not to mention the Northern Serengeti is home to the most phenomenal wildlife migration in the world: the Great Migration of the wildebeests.
Ngorongoro Crater: This caldera (not crater!) formed when a volcano collapsed a few million years ago. Now, it hosts an incredible density of wildlife, including the rare black rhino.
Tarangire National Park: An underrated park that's a must visit if you love elephants, want to see baobab trees, or prefer a less crowded safari experience. Tarangire blew Alex and I away!
Lake Eyasi: Home to many tribes including the Hadzabe (Africa's last hunter-gatherers), the Datoga (blacksmiths) and the Maasai (pastoralists).
Zanzibar: A tropical island escape with a dark history deeply rooted in the African slave trade.
Mount Kilimanjaro: If you have 5-9 days to spare, you might consider summiting the highest mountain in Africa.
Watch Before You Go
I watched Tanzania: The Royal Tour (2022). before my trip to Tanzania and it taught me a lot about the country.
